Most tree companies in the Tampa area send a crew and a saw. An arborist is a different thing: someone certified by the International Society of Arboriculture to assess a tree's structure, health and risk, and to decide what should be done before anything is cut.

We look at the whole tree — root flare, trunk, branch unions, canopy — and at what is around it: the house, the drive, the power line, the neighbour's fence. Then we tell you what the tree actually needs. Often that is less work than you expected. Sometimes it is a removal you were hoping to avoid. What an arborist does that a crew does not

• Risk assessment. Identifying failure points — included bark, decay pockets, storm cracks — before they become the reason a limb lands on your roof.
• Structural pruning to ANSI standard. Correct cuts at the branch collar so the wound seals. No topping, no lion-tailing, no stubs left to rot back into the trunk.
• Species-appropriate timing. Live oaks, laurel oaks, palms and pines each want different work at different times of year in this climate.
• Decline diagnosis. Working out whether a thinning canopy is drought, root damage, compaction, or something that will not be recovered.
• A written plan you keep. So the next visit continues the last one instead of starting over.
