A stump left in the ground is not a neutral object. In this climate it is a decay site that attracts termites and carpenter ants toward whatever is nearest, it sends up suckers for years in the case of some species, and it blocks anything you might want to plant or build there.

We grind stumps below grade — deep enough that you can turf, plant or pave over the spot — and clear the grindings rather than leaving a mound for you to deal with.

What the job involves

• Locating and marking utilities before any grinding starts
• Grinding below grade, not level with it
• Removing surface roots where they interfere with what you want to do next
• Clearing grindings from the site, or leaving them as mulch if you want them
• Backfilling so the ground is usable

Depth depends on what happens next

Turf needs less depth than a raised bed; a driveway or a footing needs more; replanting a tree in the same position needs the most, because the old root mass has to be out of the way. Tell us what the space is for and we grind to suit it. Guessing at this is how people end up regrading the same patch twice.

Most of our stump work follows a removal we did. It is usually cheaper to do both in one visit than to bring the machine back separately — worth asking about when you get the removal quote.
